We pulled up into a line of cars and waited. Unsure of exactly where we were going, I kept my mouth shut as I looked at the city all around us. Buildings gave way to the harbor, the shimmering lights on the bay providing enough illumination in the evening to create an air of romance.

No wonder the inner harbor was considered so romantic by the locals. When dusk hit the streams of tourists fled, leaving a much smaller number of romantics, staring at the water. I loved the harbor, it was one of my favorite things about coming to this city and it left a beautiful sight once the sun retreated behind the horizon.

“That’s what I do it for.” Evan’s thick voice invaded my thoughts, and I realized he was talking to me.

“What?”

“Why I would here. Why I refuse to move to the city. Well, New York. Because I love it here. I was raised here, went to school here. The harbor and all it’s people need us, you know.”

I did, the paper was always going on about layoffs and crime. But my company was always hiring. Providing training and education from upper level programming opportunities, to the mail room.

“You’re a good boss to work for.” I agreed.

“No, not good, just fair. If I was good I wouldn’t be taking in near as much profit as I am, but you know what, I’m okay with being fair.”

He was being too modest, and it made me blush.

“When we get out of the car there will be some paparazzi. Nothing like you see in Hollywood, but these kind of events attract all kinds of people.”

“Like handsome billionaire internet tycoons?”

“You could say that.”

I’d never seen so much opulence. So many beautiful people, all dressed to the nines as they got out of their cars and walked into the big, beautiful museum before us.

“Wow…”

“Don’t get star struck, now. I need you to keep your eye on the goal here. Make connections, make contacts, and listen. These people are really, not much more than me. Some of them are kind, but more are just opportunistic.”

I knew he was telling the truth, but I couldn’t help myself. I was struck by it all as our car was next. As soon as they opened the door, I stepped out, and them him. And when he did, it was like a million lights went off. Sure it wasn’t nearly as packed, or as filled with cameras as the award shows I saw on the television every year, but to have anyone there, even a few cameras felt like the entire world was shining a spotlight on me.

I was nervous and excited all at the same time.

I started to breathe shallowly, my anxiety taking over. I could feel my heartbeat, rushing into my ears, pump after pump, and I could see my hesitation start to overwhelm me. That is, until Evan put his hand on the small of my back and glided forward with me in his arms.

“You can do this, Deja.
